The Process: What to Expect
-
Beginning Therapy
Sessions are 55 minutes in length
The first session is dedicated to gaining an understanding of the client, their world, background, medical and mental health history, and obtaining any other relevant information
The therapist works to gain an understanding of the client’s current mental health needs
The client and therapist work together to create a treatment plan that addresses the client’s needs and goals in therapy
Together, both the therapist and client determine the best session frequency for the client’s needs and goals for treatment
-
The Working Phase
The time spent in the working phase varies from client to client as needs and goals may differ
In this phase, the therapist is actively utilizing the client’s treatment plan to help facilitate positive changes for the client
In addition to the time spent in session, the client is expected to be actively working on themselves outside of the therapeutic space
Treatment Plans are reviewed and revised every 90 days. New goals may be added at any time
Remember that progress is not linear!
-
The Termination Phase
At this phase in therapy, the client has met their goals for treatment and is ready to live life with their new tools and outlook
The termination process is determined by the client and therapist together to ensure client confidence
Typically sessions are less frequent and are determined by the client’s needs
Sessions are typically bi-weekly to once monthly as the client requires less therapeutic intervention
Termination is a great thing! It means you’ve achieved your goals!
